Barcelona Airport is located south-west of the city of Barcelona. It is just 3 km from the Port of Barcelona, one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean for container traffic and the leader in the cruise market.

The new Terminal 1 has been operating since June 2009, doubling its total capacity. The Corporate Terminal opened in 2008 and has capacity for 26 private jets.

The Barcelona Airport is located at 12 Km (20/30 minutes) from the city and connected by train and bus.

By train

Barcelona is also an important railway link, connected favourably with the rest of Spain and with
Europe. This constitutes an advantageous link in the intermodal transport chain with regard to
obtaining the greatest efficiency at a low cost.

With regard to Spain, Barcelona has daily express links to and from Girona, Tarragona, Lleida and the most important cities in the metropolitan area of the Catalan capital.

Barcelona is also well linked with Castellón, Valencia and Alicante via the Euromed (high speed train for the Mediteranean corridor), and with Zaragoza and Madrid via the Talgo VII and Hotel train (travelling by night).

Public Transportation within the city

The city has a convenient and efficient public transport network (buses, metro and suburban rail).

Metro

Barcelona currently has eight metro lines covering a total of 87 kilometres passing through 123 stations.

Bus

Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB) operates a fleet of over 1,000 buses, 70% of which are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat-FGC

The Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat-FGC, run by the Catalan government, supplements the metro network with a city railway network.

Tram

Barcelona tramway system, known as the Tram, was relaunched in 2004. This means of transport, which was abolished in 1971, is now an accessible, environmentally friendly, fast and comfortable system. It consists of two sections: the Diagonal Baix Llobregat and the Ciutadella-Besos.

Train

Barcelona also has an extensive network of commuter trains, operated by RENFE the Spanish National Railway Company, which depart from main stations every five or ten minutes. The train provides comfortable and rapid access to the city centre from the outskirts of the city.

Central Integrated Railway Network

The Integrated Fare System makes it possible to use the different modes of transport (Underground, bus, tram, FGC and Renfe) on the same journey within the Metropolitan Region, both within the city and outside it on local rail services.

Connections between Barcelona and the airport:

Aerobús

  • Daily service between Plaça de Catalunya and Plaça Espanya and the airport.
  • Frequency: every 5 minutes.
  • Approximate journey time: 30 minutes.
  • Single ticket price: 5,30 € ; 9,15 € (return).

Train (RENFE)

  • Daily connections with the airport from the Renfe (Spanish Rail) stations at Sants and Passeig de Gràcia
  • Frequency: every 30 minutes.
  • Journey time: 20 minutes (from Sants), 25 minutes (from Passeig de Gràcia)

Bus (TMB)

  • The 46 bus runs from Pl. d’Espanya to the airport.
  • Frequency: every 25-35 minutes.
  • Single ticket price: 2,00 € (integrated fare).

Night bus (NITBUS)

  • The N17 night bus operates from Pl. Catalunya to the airport, stopping at Pl. d’Espanya.
  • Frequency: every 20 minutes.
  • Single ticket price: 2,00 € (integrated fare).

Metro

Line 9 is due to link the Airport with the city by 2014.

Taxis

Barcelona has 10,500 taxis, which are easily identified by their yellow and black colour. They have a clearly visible green light on their roof which, when lit, indicates that they are available. A ride from the airport to the city centre costs approximately 25 €.

There are a number of seven-seater vehicles suitable for small groups of tourists or business people which offer more economical rates per person. There is also a fleet of taxis which can be adapted to carry people with disabilities (on request).
